Switzerland Endorses Moroccan Autonomy Proposal for Sahara

Switzerland's Support for Morocco's Autonomy Initiative

During a recent working visit to Bern, Mr. Ignazio Cassis, the Federal Councillor and Vice-President of the Swiss Confederation, along with Mr. Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, articulated a joint position regarding the Sahara region. In a collaborative statement, Switzerland expressed its endorsement of Security Council Resolution 2797, highlighting that the proposal for genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could present a viable solution to the ongoing regional dispute. This endorsement not only illustrates Switzerland's diplomatic stance but also aligns with a broader international consensus that has been fostered by the efforts of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, reinforcing Morocco's claim to sovereignty over the Sahara.

Moreover, the joint communication underscored Switzerland's acknowledgment of the essential role that the United Nations plays in mediating this issue, alongside the initiatives being undertaken by the Secretary-General's Personal Envoy. The affirmation of support for Morocco's autonomy initiative is indicative of the shifting dynamics in international relations regarding the Sahara conflict, as more countries begin to recognize the merits of a negotiated settlement that respects Morocco's territorial integrity.
