Strengthening Ties: Switzerland and Morocco's Strategic Partnership

Switzerland and Morocco: A Strategic Partnership for Progress

In a significant diplomatic engagement on Friday in Bern, Ignazio Cassis, the Federal Councillor and Vice-President of the Swiss Confederation, emphasized Morocco's pivotal role as a key partner for Switzerland. This assertion came during his meeting with Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, who is currently on a working visit to Switzerland. Cassis highlighted that under the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco stands as an essential ally for Switzerland, particularly in fostering cooperation along the southern shores of the Mediterranean and across the African continent.

At the conclusion of their discussions, both leaders issued a Joint Communication, expressing their satisfaction with the progress made towards achieving several goals outlined in the Joint Declaration signed in December 2021 in Bern. This cooperation was further reaffirmed during Cassis's visit to Rabat in June 2023. They took the opportunity to review advancements in various critical sectors, including trade and investment, climate change and renewable energy initiatives, mutual legal assistance, and social insurance, which are vital for enhancing bilateral relations.

Moreover, Cassis and Bourita announced the upcoming launch of a Swiss economic cooperation program in Morocco, set to commence in early 2025 and financed by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). This initiative is expected to further solidify the economic ties between the two nations, paving the way for increased collaboration in various sectors.

As the two countries prepare to commemorate the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, which were established following Morocco's independence in 1956, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the bilateral partnership. With Morocco's strategic position and its commitment to regional stability and economic development under the enlightened leadership of King Mohammed VI, the nation is poised to be a significant player in enhancing South-South cooperation, benefiting not only Switzerland but the broader region.
