Strengthening the Almería-Nador Route: A Strategic Move Ahead of Marhaba 2026

Enhancing Connectivity for Moroccan Expatriates

In a proactive effort to alleviate the anticipated congestion in the Strait of Gibraltar during the peak travel season of Marhaba 2026, Africa Morocco Link is set to bolster the Almería-Nador maritime route. This strategic initiative comes at a crucial juncture as authorities brace for increased traffic, particularly through the busy ports of Algeciras and Tarifa, which are expected to experience significant delays this summer. Two primary factors are contributing to this forecasted congestion: the implementation of the European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES), which introduces new biometric screening that is likely to prolong processing times, and a solar eclipse occurring on August 12 that is expected to attract a surge of tourists to Spain concurrently with the peak return travel period for Moroccan expatriates.

In response to these challenges, the Port Authority of Almería is enhancing its maritime connection with Nador. The entry of Africa Morocco Link into this route signifies an increase in capacity and frequency of crossings, providing travelers with an alternative option to avoid the impending bottlenecks. This is particularly vital for Almería, where approximately 70% of its annual maritime traffic is associated with Morocco, establishing it as one of Spain's most Morocco-centered ports.

New Seasonal Service and Its Benefits

As part of a broader operational strategy, Africa Morocco Link is launching a seasonal ferry service from Nador to Almería, scheduled to operate from June 10 to September 15. This service will utilize a high-capacity vessel capable of accommodating up to 1,500 passengers and 400 vehicles per crossing. Although the journey takes around seven hours—longer than direct crossings through the Strait—the route offers a significant advantage by reducing the risk of congestion. For many Moroccan expatriates, particularly those from the Rif and Oriental regions, Nador serves as the most direct entry point into Spain. By opting for Almería, travelers can potentially avoid hundreds of kilometers of driving and lengthy waiting times at busy ports.

To promote this alternative route, authorities are launching a targeted communication campaign aimed at Moroccan communities in France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, encouraging them to consider Almería as their primary choice for travel instead of a secondary option. With an estimated 3.6 million travelers expected during Marhaba 2026, even minor shifts in travel patterns could significantly impact the overall flow of traffic. Each vehicle that opts for Almería translates to fewer cars in line at Algeciras, thereby easing the congestion for all travelers.
