Spanish Political Party Vox Criticizes Morocco-Europe Relations

Vox's Escalating Rhetoric Against Morocco and Europe

In a notable escalation of its anti-Morocco rhetoric, the Spanish right-wing political party Vox has launched a fresh campaign aimed at disrupting the diplomatic rapprochement between Morocco and the European Union. This move comes on the heels of recent European positions that have shown support for strengthening partnerships with Morocco, particularly regarding the recognition of the autonomy initiative as a serious and pragmatic solution to the Western Sahara conflict.

Jorge Buxadé, a Member of the European Parliament affiliated with Vox and the group "Nationalists for Europe," has directed a series of inquiries to the European Commission. In these inquiries, he attempts to intertwine the contentious issues of Ceuta and Melilla—Spanish enclaves on the Moroccan coast—with the discussions held between Moroccan and European officials in recent weeks. These discussions notably included Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, who has been at the forefront of negotiations aimed at enhancing bilateral relations.

Buxadé's approach has been characterized by aggressive accusations against Morocco concerning border issues, migration, and trade practices. He claims that Morocco exerts undue pressure on Madrid and has even raised unfounded allegations related to maritime boundaries near the Canary Islands. This behavior illustrates the unease of far-right factions in Spain, who are evidently alarmed by the rapid evolution of Moroccan-European relations.

Political analysts note that Vox's actions are reflective of a broader concern regarding Morocco's increasingly prominent role on the European agenda. Morocco is being recognized as a key partner in various domains including security, migration, energy, and investment. The growing political confidence in Morocco's regional and international initiatives is further underscored by the backing it has received from significant global powers such as the United States, France, and Germany, all of which have reaffirmed their support for Morocco's autonomy proposal as the most viable solution to the long-standing territorial dispute.

As Morocco continues to secure successive diplomatic gains, the relationship between Morocco and Spain appears to be stabilizing, particularly since Madrid's endorsement of the autonomy initiative in March 2022. This development has prompted some political factions in Spain to exploit complex bilateral issues for domestic electoral purposes rather than fostering dialogue and cooperation.
