On Saturday, the western regions of Germany experienced intense thunderstorms that significantly disrupted many outdoor gatherings, particularly barbecues. Heavy rain, strong gusts of wind, and even small hailstones contributed to the chaos, making it difficult for residents to follow through with their outdoor plans. As night fell, the skies lit up with impressive lightning displays, adding a dramatic touch to the stormy weather.
The areas most affected included the metropolitan regions of Aachen, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, and Dortmund. The city of Cologne also experienced repeated thunderous activity from the afternoon onwards, with parts of the Münsterland region being hit later in the evening.
In Krefeld, Mönchengladbach, and Viersen, emergency services were called into action due to fallen trees, flooded streets, and basements that filled with water. However, other regions managed to escape the severe impacts of the storms relatively unscathed.
