Senegalese Fans Released from Moroccan Prison After Violence During Africa Cup Final

Three Senegalese football fans were released from a Moroccan prison on Saturday after serving a three-month sentence for their involvement in violent incidents that occurred during the Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat. This event, which took place on January 18, has led to further legal repercussions, with an additional fifteen Senegalese fans currently serving sentences ranging from six months to a year for similar offenses.

The detained individuals faced serious charges, including hooliganism, which encompassed acts of violence against law enforcement, pitch invasion, and throwing objects onto the field. The atmosphere during the final match was charged, particularly after a controversial decision by the referee to award Morocco a penalty in the dying minutes, following the annulment of a goal scored by Senegal. This decision incited outrage among the Senegalese players, who briefly left the pitch in protest, resulting in chaos as fans attempted to storm the field and objects were hurled onto the grass.

In a related case, a French national of Algerian descent was also granted release on the same day after completing a three-month sentence for throwing a water bottle during the match. Despite the turmoil, Senegal managed to regain composure and returned to the field, where Moroccan striker Brahim Díaz missed the penalty, ultimately allowing Senegal to secure a 1-0 victory with a goal from Pape Gueye in extra time.

Following the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) controversial decision to award the championship title to Morocco on March 17, Senegal has appealed this ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The aftermath of this final continues to unfold, highlighting the intense emotions and rivalries within African football.
