Search Operation Underway After Military Incident in Morocco

According to a statement from US Africa Command (Africom), an incident occurred on May 2 at the Cap Draa training area near the city of Tan Tan, situated along the Atlantic coast. Following the receipt of this information, the United States, in collaboration with Morocco and other nations participating in the 'African Lion' exercise, promptly initiated a large-scale search and rescue operation.

Africom reaffirmed in an official statement, 'The incident is still under investigation, and the search continues.' This exercise, which began in April and was set to conclude in early May, involved four countries: Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal. The disappearance happened during the final phase of the training program, raising significant concern among the participants.

The African Lion exercise has been conducted annually since 2004, marking it as the largest joint US military exercise on the African continent. High-ranking military officials from the United States and its key allies in the region regularly participate in this event. Official representatives from the US military assert that this annual multinational cooperative exercise serves as a platform to enhance regional security cooperation and improve the readiness of participating forces for global crises.
