Search and Rescue Underway for Missing U.S. Service Members in Morocco

U.S. Service Members Missing in Morocco Following Military Exercises

In a troubling development, two U.S. Army soldiers have gone missing in southwestern Morocco while participating in the annual multinational military exercises known as African Lion. This incident was confirmed by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) on Sunday. According to a defense official who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, the soldiers were reported missing during a recreational hike after the day's training exercises had concluded.

The official clarified that the service members were not engaged in any active training at the time of their disappearance. "They were out on a recreational hike," the official stated, highlighting that the search and rescue operation is actively underway. AFRICOM has announced that U.S. and Moroccan forces, along with other participating nations in the African Lion exercise, have launched a coordinated effort to locate the missing soldiers.

The Moroccan military reported that the incident occurred on Saturday around 9 p.m. near the Cap Draa Training Area, located close to the Atlantic Ocean and characterized by mountainous terrain interspersed with desert and semi-desert plains. The search operation is extensive, involving helicopters, ships, mountain rescue teams, and divers, as the search crews work tirelessly to locate the missing personnel. "The soldiers were last seen near ocean cliffs in the vicinity of the Cap Draa Training Area during scheduled training. When they did not return as expected, U.S. and Moroccan personnel immediately initiated a joint search effort," the official added.

African Lion Exercise: A Major Multinational Military Initiative

The African Lion exercise, which commenced in April and is set to conclude in early May, spans four countries, including Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal. This large-scale military exercise involves over 7,000 personnel from more than 30 nations, making it the largest annual joint military exercise conducted by the U.S. on the African continent since its inception in 2004. The event serves as a critical platform for enhancing regional security cooperation and improving the readiness of participating forces for various global crises.

Historically, African Lion has brought together active-duty members from different branches of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Army Reserve, Air Force, and Marine Corps. Notably, the exercise has seen participation from high-ranking military officials from both the U.S. and its prominent African allies. However, the exercises have not been without tragedy; in 2012, two U.S. Marines tragically lost their lives and two others were injured in a helicopter crash while participating in the African Lion exercises in Morocco's Agadir region.

Morocco continues to serve as a significant ally for the United States in a region facing various challenges. Since 2020, several military coups in neighboring countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have led to a shift in power dynamics, with military officers distancing themselves from Western influences amid rising discontent with their governments' ability to manage violence and instability.
