Royal Air Maroc's Flight Resumption Amid Global Challenges
Royal Air Maroc (RAM) is progressively reintroducing flights to Central Africa after halting services on May 24, 2026, due to a significant spike in fuel prices driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The national carrier has begun to reactivate certain routes while keeping others suspended until the end of August. This strategic decision comes as a relief to many travelers eager to return to their destinations following weeks of disruption.
Recently, RAM has resumed flights to Libreville, marking a significant return of its aircraft to the Léon-Mba International Airport, much to the joy of passengers. Additionally, the Casablanca-Bangui route has also been reopened, indicating a cautious yet optimistic approach towards restoring connectivity. However, several other key routes within RAM's African network, including those connecting Casablanca to Kinshasa, Brazzaville, Douala, and Yaoundé, will remain suspended until the end of August, indicating the airline's careful management of its operational capacity in light of ongoing market uncertainties.
This partial resumption of services is set against a backdrop of continued volatility in energy costs, impacting the aviation industry at large. In late May, RAM announced the temporary suspension of twelve international routes, which included six destinations in Central Africa. Along with these, two routes from Tangier to Malaga and Barcelona, as well as four routes from Marrakech to Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille, and Brussels, were also affected. The airline’s management cited the surge in kerosene prices—closely linked to geopolitical strife—and a decline in demand for some services as primary reasons for the operational adjustments. Such challenges are not unique to RAM, as many airlines worldwide are grappling with similar issues, prompting widespread alterations to flight schedules and route networks.
