CAF Introduces Innovative Festival Style Format for U-17 AFCON Morocco 2026
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made a groundbreaking announcement regarding the upcoming U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to take place in Morocco from May 13 to June 2, 2026. This tournament will introduce a unique festival-style format that aims to enhance the experience for players and teams by centralizing matches, training sessions, and operational activities. This innovative approach is expected to streamline tournament logistics and promote player development, while also providing a more engaging environment for the participating nations.
Under the new structure, the majority of matches, excluding the opening game, semi-finals, and finals, will be held at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Morocco. This centralized venue is anticipated to foster a sense of community and excitement among teams and fans alike. CAF's initiative is designed not only to improve the operational efficiency of the tournament but also to standardize experiences across different editions, ensuring that all participating teams can focus on their performance and development.
Recently, the final draw for the competition revealed a highly competitive group stage. The hosts and reigning champions, Morocco, will compete in Group A alongside Tunisia, Egypt, and Ethiopia. Group B will see former champions Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon facing off against Uganda and the DR Congo, who will be making their debut in this prestigious tournament. Meanwhile, Group C features last year's runners-up, Mali, who will go up against Angola, Mozambique, and Tanzania, while Group D consists of Senegal, South Africa, Algeria, and two-time champions Ghana, promising to be one of the toughest groups in the tournament.
This competition also serves as a vital qualification pathway to the FIFA U-17 World Cup scheduled to be held in Qatar later in 2026. The eight teams that progress to the quarter-finals will automatically secure their spots in the World Cup, while the third-placed teams in each group will enter play-offs to determine the final two representatives from Africa. In total, ten African nations will participate in the global finals, underscoring the significance of this tournament in the development of young football talent across the continent.
