New Central Unit in Rabat Aims to Empower Women Victims of Violence

Inauguration of a Central Unit to Support Women Victims of Violence

The newly inaugurated central unit in Rabat, dedicated to assisting women who have experienced violence, represents a significant milestone in Morocco's efforts to combat gender-based violence. This initiative, launched under the auspices of the Ministry of Solidarity, Social Integration, and Family, was officially opened on Friday and was attended by prominent officials and representatives from various national and international organizations. Notable attendees included Minister Naima Benyahya and Hicham Balaoui, the Attorney General of the King at the Court of Cassation, along with Marielle Sander from the United Nations Population Fund and Fatiha Chtatou, President of the National Commission for the Support of Women Victims of Violence.

The establishment of this unit is grounded in Law 103.13, which specifically addresses violence against women, aiming to enhance the support framework for victims and ensuring they receive the necessary protection and care. This initiative not only marks a progressive step in the national response to violence against women but also aligns with Morocco's constitutional commitment to safeguarding women's rights. The unit is designed to provide comprehensive support services, including dignified assistance, legal counsel, psychological aid, and social support, all aimed at restoring the dignity of women who have faced violence.

Minister Benyahya emphasized the pivotal role this new mechanism will play in overseeing and coordinating the actions of decentralized units that operate at the local level. Fatiha Chtatou further elaborated that this central unit is specifically equipped to cater to the needs of women and their children, offering a safe space for those seeking help. Moreover, the unit will monitor reported cases through the Amane-Laki platform, which is tailored for women in vulnerable situations, ensuring that they receive timely and effective support.

Through this initiative, the ministry will collaborate with the Regional and Local Support Commissions, while also maintaining oversight under the Public Prosecutor's Office. This integrated approach aims to create a robust network of support for women, highlighting Morocco's ongoing commitment to addressing violence against women and fostering a safer environment for all.
