Mustapha Fahmi: Spotlight at the Marrakech African Book Festival

Mustapha Fahmi Takes Center Stage at the Marrakech African Book Festival

On the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day, acclaimed author and English literature professor at the University of Quebec in Chicoutimi (UQAC), Mustapha Fahmi, is making notable contributions to the Marrakech African Book Festival. This year's theme, "Imagining Other Possibilities," aims to gather writers of African descent or those who have authored works related to Africa, providing a vibrant platform for literary expression and cultural dialogue.

Born in Marrakech, Fahmi passionately believes in the transformative power of fiction, asserting that it enables us to articulate truths that may be suppressed in society. In a recent interview, he stated, "One of the reasons I was invited is that a recurring theme in all my books is that literature is more authentic than life itself." He posits that literary characters often resonate more profoundly than the individuals we encounter in our daily lives.

The Authenticity of Literature

To illustrate his perspective, Fahmi shared a thought-provoking scenario. He asked whether individuals would express their boredom with one another in real life, suggesting that in a literary context, characters would not hesitate to confront each other directly. "What is more truthful, literature or life?" he challenged, emphasizing the unique capacity of literature to convey unfiltered realities.

Coincidentally, Fahmi's participation in this festival aligns with the anniversary of the birth and death of the legendary playwright William Shakespeare, who was born and died on April 23. Shakespeare's influence permeates Fahmi's latest novel, "The Beauty of Cleopatra," published by La Peuplade, reinforcing the significance of literary heritage in contemporary storytelling.

In light of the increasing prevalence of technology and artificial intelligence, Fahmi observes a growing sensitivity among readers regarding copyright issues. He noted, "I see it every day in Saguenay; people are reading more and they are becoming increasingly aware of these challenges. Whether in my classes or during conferences, individuals are seeking knowledge rather than mere information." Such reflections underscore the evolving landscape of literature and the critical role authors play in shaping societal consciousness.
