Humanitarian Clemency for Senegalese Football Fans
In a significant gesture of goodwill, King Mohammed VI of Morocco has granted clemency to Senegalese football fans who were imprisoned following the disturbances that erupted during the Africa Cup final in Rabat. This announcement was made by the royal court on Saturday, highlighting the humanitarian considerations that motivated the king's decision.
The amnesty is rooted in the longstanding fraternal ties between Morocco and Senegal, and it coincides with the upcoming Eid al-Adha celebration, which will commence on Wednesday in Morocco. This festive occasion is marked by communal prayers and acts of charity, making the timing of the clemency particularly poignant.
Controversial Africa Cup Final and Subsequent Legal Repercussions
The Senegal national team triumphed in a chaotic Africa Cup final held on January 18, winning 1-0 against Morocco. However, their victory was later overturned by the African Football Confederation (CAF) on March 17, nearly two months after the match, awarding the title to Morocco due to a controversial administrative ruling.
The events leading up to the arrests were tumultuous; after a late penalty was awarded to Morocco, Senegalese fans attempted to storm the field following the disallowance of a goal that had initially seemed valid. In the aftermath, Moroccan courts sentenced 18 Senegalese fans, who had been detained since the final, to prison terms ranging from three months to one year. Three of these fans were released in mid-April after serving their three-month sentences.
Following the release of these individuals, 15 additional Senegalese fans remained incarcerated, having received sentences between six months and one year. It is anticipated that the royal pardon will extend to these fans as well, as confirmed by attorney Patrick Kabou, who represents many of the Senegalese detainees. He stated that their release is expected to occur on Saturday evening.
The legal proceedings against the fans were primarily based on surveillance footage from the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah in Rabat, alongside medical reports from injured police officers and security personnel. The damages incurred during the disturbances have been estimated to exceed €370,000. In the wake of CAF's decision to award the continental title to Morocco, Senegal has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
