Morocco Strengthens International Air Diplomacy at Marrakech Aviation Forum

The recent Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS 2026) held in Marrakech served as a pivotal platform for Morocco to enhance its diplomatic relations through air transport with various partners across Europe, Africa, and Asia. The focus of this forum was primarily on fostering collaboration in logistics, aviation advancements, and sustainability initiatives. Moroccan Transport Minister Abdessamad Kayouh took the opportunity to reinforce Morocco's international aviation engagement, particularly after solidifying logistics partnerships with nations across Africa.

During this forum, high-level meetings were conducted with representatives from several regions, including Europe, Asia, Turkey, Yemen, and Costa Rica. A significant aspect of the discussions with Turkey revolved around improving air connectivity and road transport collaboration. During talks with Turkish Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Enver İskurt, both parties acknowledged the strategic geographic positions of their respective countries, which serve as vital hubs for connecting various regions. This cooperation is expected to enhance travel and trade links significantly.

Moreover, Morocco aimed to strengthen its aviation ties with the European Union. In conversations with Eddy Liégeois, the head of aviation policy at the European Commission, Minister Kayouh elaborated on Morocco's ambitious airport expansion plans and initiatives aimed at modernizing the national fleet in alignment with global standards. These infrastructure projects are designed to accommodate the growing passenger demand and to prepare for significant international events that Morocco is set to host in the near future, including the World Cup.

In addition to infrastructure development, the dialogue with the European Union also focused on the decarbonization of air transport. Both parties explored collaborative opportunities for developing sustainable aviation fuel production within Morocco. This initiative is not only seen as a crucial step towards achieving global climate targets but also as a means to bolster local industrial growth.
