Morocco Invests MAD 80 Billion to Enhance Telecom and 5G Infrastructure

Significant Advances in Telecommunications Coverage

Morocco is making significant strides in advancing its telecommunications infrastructure, having successfully expanded coverage to over 10,690 of the targeted 10,740 areas with 2G, 3G, and 4G services. The Delegate Minister for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, recently highlighted the progress made under the national strategy aimed at enhancing high-speed broadband access across the nation. This initial phase of the national broadband development plan is nearly complete, exemplifying the government’s commitment to improving connectivity.

Future Plans for Rural Connectivity and 5G Expansion

Building upon this success, the Moroccan government has launched the second phase of the broadband initiative, which is set to enhance connectivity in an additional 2,000 rural areas by the year 2026. This ambitious expansion plan was developed through a collaborative approach, engaging various stakeholders, including local authorities and elected officials. Furthermore, to ensure that remote regions lacking terrestrial network viability are not left behind, the government plans to implement Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) satellite technologies. Financial assistance will be available, providing up to MAD 2,500 per subscription, with a maximum of 4,000 beneficiaries annually.

In terms of 5G technology, Morocco has already rolled out services in over 50 cities, catering to around 7 million subscribers. The goal is to provide 5G coverage to 45% of the population by 2026 and to extend that figure to over 85% by 2030. In line with this objective, telecommunications operators are projected to invest more than MAD 80 billion by 2035 to further enhance and expand 5G services. Additionally, the nation is implementing a national fiber optic deployment plan, which aims to connect 5.6 million households by 2030. This includes initiatives to promote infrastructure sharing among operators and enforce a ministerial decree for fiber optic installations in new housing developments.
