Morocco and the United States: Aziz Akhannouch Welcomes Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

On Thursday, April 30, 2026, Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch met with the United States Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, during his official visit to Morocco. This significant encounter, which also included the United States Ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan, served as a platform to discuss ways to enhance the strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States. This relationship has been fostered under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and President Donald Trump, as highlighted in a statement from the Prime Minister's office.

During their discussions, Akhannouch expressed Morocco's appreciation for the United States' stance on the national issue, particularly in light of Washington's recent reaffirmation of its recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara. The U.S. has emphasized its support for Morocco's autonomy proposal as the sole basis for achieving a fair and lasting resolution to the ongoing dispute.

Furthermore, Akhannouch acknowledged the assistance provided by the United States to American companies looking to invest in Morocco's southern provinces. He specifically mentioned sectors such as green hydrogen, tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy, underscoring Morocco's potential role as a gateway for American investments into the African continent through a mutually beneficial partnership.

The two parties also explored opportunities to develop bilateral economic partnerships, investments, and trade relations. They stressed the importance of cooperation through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), alongside support for American operators in the social sector, particularly in education and health.

This meeting was a reminder of the deep historical ties that have existed between Morocco and the United States since the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1787, which laid the foundation for a long-standing friendship and collaboration.
