Morocco and Germany Condemn Iranian Aggressions and Waterway Coercion

Strengthening Ties Between Morocco and Germany

In a recent statement, Nasser Bourita, the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that the positive dynamics in the relationship between Morocco and Germany are not a recent development, but rather stem from a deep-rooted history that dates back to the 19th century. The historical ties began when Otto von Bismarck sent the first ambassador to Sultan Mohammed Ben Abd Al-Rahman, and they were further solidified with the signing of the first agreement between the two nations in 1890. This long-standing relationship reflects the depth and significance of the bonds shared between the two countries.

Bourita, speaking at a joint press conference with his German counterpart during his visit to Morocco, highlighted that the current focus is on future cooperation. He noted that the relationship is evolving significantly across various sectors, with Germany now recognized as Morocco's fifth-largest trading partner and third in Europe. This growing partnership is underscored by the presence of over three hundred German companies contributing to Morocco's economic development, alongside a surge in tourism, which saw nearly one million German tourists visiting the kingdom last year.

Addressing Regional Stability and Coercion

Regarding prospects for cooperation, the Moroccan Foreign Minister pointed out that discussions with his German counterpart provided an opportunity to explore ways to enhance German investment and economic presence in Morocco. There are promising opportunities on the horizon, such as preparations for the 2030 World Cup and collaborative projects in Africa focused on renewable energy, digital transition, and energy transformation. Bourita affirmed that the legal framework for this cooperation is well established, with approximately three hundred agreements covering various sectors.

Furthermore, he indicated that the dialogue between the two nations revealed a consensus on numerous issues, including strategies for achieving stability and development in the Sahel region, combating terrorism, and addressing separatist movements. On the topic of the Middle East, Bourita stressed the necessity of ensuring stability in Gaza, referencing the twenty-point plan endorsed by the Security Council as a reference for achieving lasting peace based on a two-state solution, which envisions a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He articulated Morocco's firm stance against Iranian aggressions towards Arab nations and the use of waterways as tools for pressure and coercion, emphasizing that such maritime routes should serve to enhance trade and communication rather than being treated as private property. In conclusion, Bourita reiterated Morocco's unwavering commitment to defending the territorial integrity of nations and opposing the use of force in international relations, a principle that governs Morocco's position on the Ukraine conflict, including support for its territorial integrity and the rejection of imposing realities by force while advocating for peaceful solutions over military ones.
