Morocco's Strategic Role in Green Energy Transition
On April 30, 2026, Danièle Duto, the Deputy Head of the European Union Delegation to Morocco, highlighted Morocco's esteemed position as a "first-class strategic partner" for the European Union in the realm of green energy transition. This assertion was made during his speech at an international conference on green methanol and green ammonia held in Fes, organized by the "Green H2 Cluster." Duto emphasized the significance of the green partnership established between the European Union and Morocco in 2022, which has successfully guided three pioneering projects over the past three years.
Among these initiatives is the "Med-Gem" project, a program aimed at enhancing the production of green molecules in the southern neighborhood, enabling Morocco to initiate its first preliminary accreditation process for green hydrogen projects that align with EU standards. Furthermore, he referenced the ongoing feasibility study for sustainable aviation fuel production in Morocco, along with a broader initiative focusing on green energy.
In support of this latter project, the European Union is providing an additional funding of 10 million euros to facilitate Morocco's energy transition. This funding is directed towards regulatory reforms, research and development, and the establishment of a regional hub in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region. Duto expressed satisfaction with the significant involvement of European companies alongside Moroccan stakeholders in advancing these transformative projects.
As Morocco continues to forge its path in the green energy sector, the collaboration with the European Union not only underscores the country's commitment to sustainable development but also enhances its position as a leader in the transition to renewable energy sources in the region.
