Marrakech and Fès Shine as Top Walking Cities in the World

Marrakech and Fès Make Their Mark in Global Walking City Rankings

On April 26, 2026, Morocco continues to dazzle on the global tourism stage as two of its cities, Marrakech and Fès, have secured spots in the prestigious 2026 ranking of the top 100 cities worldwide to explore on foot. This notable achievement underscores the undeniable allure of these Moroccan destinations. In a groundbreaking list that highlights ideal locations for walking enthusiasts, Morocco stands out with two remarkable representatives. The ochre city of Marrakech has claimed the 56th position, closely followed by Fès at the 60th spot. This ranking was spotlighted by the New York Post, which shared insights from a comprehensive study conducted by the guided tours platform GuruWalk.

Methodology Behind the Rankings

The rigorous methodology employed to establish this hierarchy involved an extensive analysis of over 467,000 verified reviews from travelers who participated in 3,600 tours across more than 800 cities. The evaluation criteria, measured between April 2025 and April 2026, focused on two main factors: the volume of visitors, which accounted for 65% of the overall score, and visitor satisfaction, contributing the remaining 35%. While Moroccan cities exhibited stellar performances in this global ranking, the top positions remained dominated by European cities. Rome took the crown as the number one walking city, with researchers noting that every step in the Italian capital immerses visitors in a journey through empires, popes, and artistic renaissances. Following closely behind were Madrid, described as an "open-air museum," and Budapest, reinforcing the competitive nature of this ranking in which Marrakech and Fès successfully established their presence.
