Investigation Continues into Fez Building Collapse

In a recent update from the Fez Court of Appeal, the investigating judge has decided to postpone the detailed interrogation session regarding the collapse of two residential buildings located in the "Moustakbal" district of the city. This decision was announced on Tuesday morning, with the next session scheduled for June 22, as part of the ongoing preliminary investigation process. The case has drawn significant public attention, especially considering the tragic outcomes of the incident, which resulted in the loss of 22 lives and left 16 others injured.

A total of 19 individuals are facing charges in connection with this case, which includes 8 who are currently in preventive detention and 11 who have been released. Among those involved are local officials and elected representatives, as well as authority personnel, municipal employees, and contractors. Following the tragic collapse last December, the public prosecutor initiated an investigation that has led to the prosecution of 21 individuals, with 8 already imprisoned in the local Bouerkaz prison, while the others await trial in a free state.

Serious Violations Uncovered in Construction Processes

The investigative findings have brought to light numerous irregularities related to the construction of these buildings. Key issues include unauthorized additional floors and the use of non-compliant materials, alongside violations concerning the legal transfer of air rights. Furthermore, the investigations revealed serious breaches in the process of formalizing sales contracts and issuing administrative certificates without fulfilling the necessary legal requirements. The charges against the accused individuals are primarily focused on the suspicion of causing unintentional homicide and injury, along with various other offenses related to urban planning and administrative management. As the case unfolds, the upcoming interrogation sessions are expected to provide further clarity on these serious allegations.
