Investigation Delayed for Zawiya District Leader in Fes
In a significant development within the Fes judicial system, the investigating judge in the first chamber of the Court of Appeal has announced a postponement of the detailed investigation concerning the Zawiya district head and twenty other individuals implicated in a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of twenty-two people and injuries to sixteen others. This tragic event occurred when two residential buildings collapsed in the Al-Mustaqbal neighborhood. The court has set June 22 as the new date for resuming these critical investigations.
On May 5, 2026, the judicial process began with interrogations involving various parties, including the district head who belongs to the Independence Party, along with his deputy responsible for urban planning, who transitioned from the Independence Party to the National Rally of Independents. Alongside them is a second deputy affiliated with the Authenticity and Modernity Party, as well as several secretaries and other officials. Given the sizable number of defendants, which totals twenty-one, the judge, Mohamed Talib, has organized them into groups to facilitate thorough questioning. This arrangement aims to streamline the investigative process, especially considering that statements from witnesses have already been collected by the regional judicial police during preliminary investigations.
Among those currently detained at the Bourkaiz prison in connection with this case are a civil service employee responsible for signature verification, an authority officer, a civil status officer, a contractor, a city chief, a taxi driver, and a worker from a private security company, alongside a seasonal laborer. Meanwhile, the remaining defendants are under temporary release as investigations continue.
