Global Wind Report: Morocco Ranks Third in Africa and Fourth in the Middle East for Rising Wind Power

Morocco's Ascendancy in Wind Energy

According to the latest findings from the Global Wind Report 2026, Morocco has established itself as a key player in the wind energy sector, securing its position as the third-largest producer of wind power in Africa and the fourth in the Middle East. This achievement is a testament to Morocco's ongoing commitment to renewable energy, characterized by consistent investments and an early start in developing this sector. The report reveals that Morocco's total installed wind power capacity reached 2,629 megawatts by the end of 2025, reflecting an annual growth rate of 11%, which translates to an additional 261 megawatts compared to 2024's capacity of 2,368 megawatts. This upward trajectory has solidified Morocco's status as one of the most mature wind energy markets in the region.

Regional and Global Context of Wind Energy Growth

The regional landscape for wind energy is undergoing rapid transformations, with Africa and the Middle East adding 2,616 megawatts of new wind capacity to the electrical grid in 2025, marking a significant increase of 32% from the previous year. This growth has brought the total installed capacity in the region to 15,237 megawatts, which represents more than a 20% annual increase, showcasing the best historical performance for the region driven mainly by renewed project activity in South Africa and accelerated investments in Saudi Arabia. Despite the impressive growth in Saudi Arabia, Morocco has managed to maintain its edge, ranking higher than the Kingdom, which added 1,512 megawatts in 2025, increasing its total capacity to 2,324 megawatts. This competitive dynamic indicates a promising energy landscape, where strategies align with energy sovereignty and the shift toward a green economy.

Looking ahead, the Global Wind Energy Council anticipates that the Africa and Middle East region will add 35 gigawatts of new wind capacity between 2026 and 2030, with Africa expected to contribute 47% of this total. The Middle East alone is projected to add over 18 gigawatts, contingent upon the successful execution of current projects. As countries like Egypt sign agreements to purchase renewable energy and South Africa develops a significant pipeline of projects, the continent is poised to become a competitive arena for clean energy advancements. Globally, 2025 was a pivotal year for the wind energy industry, witnessing the installation of 165 gigawatts of new capacity—a 40% increase from 2024—and bringing the total global capacity to 1,299 gigawatts. The Asia-Pacific region, led by China and India, accounted for 80% of these new installations, while Europe surpassed the 300-gigawatt mark, highlighting a concentration of growth in specific regions.

In summary, Morocco's strategic investments and early adoption of renewable energy technologies have positioned it as a regional leader in wind energy. However, maintaining this status will require continued efforts to accelerate investment and adapt to escalating competition in a region that is increasingly becoming a major battleground for clean energy resources.
