Revolutionizing Travel: Countries Leading the Post-Pandemic Surge
The desire to travel is resurging, and while some destinations continue to grapple with the ramifications of the pandemic, others are witnessing unprecedented growth in tourism. According to a recent analysis by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), certain countries have notably attracted a significant number of additional international travelers since 2019, marking a remarkable recovery in the travel sector.
Surprisingly, traditional tourist hotspots in Europe failed to secure top positions in this ranking. Instead, countries from the Middle East, North Africa, and South America have emerged as the frontrunners in tourism growth. Overall, the study revealed that in 2025, there was a 4% increase in international arrivals across the 53 countries surveyed compared to pre-pandemic levels. However, this average masks vast disparities among different regions.
Leading the charge in tourism growth is Saudi Arabia, which reported a staggering 67% increase in international visitors in 2025 compared to 2019, positioning it as the fastest-growing travel destination worldwide. This surge can be attributed to a strategic initiative by the kingdom, which has invested billions in expanding its tourism sector, relaxing visa regulations, and developing new attractions. Historical sites like Al-Ula, along with new cultural offerings and an expanding network of international flights, aim to make the country more appealing to vacationers.
Following closely is Morocco, which experienced a 53% rise in tourism. Egypt occupies the third spot with a 47% increase in visitors. Both countries have benefitted from enhanced flight connectivity and a growing global interest in North African destinations. Morocco, in particular, is attracting travelers with affordable options, improved safety, and a blend of adventure, sports, and relaxation. In contrast, Egypt remains a classic choice for beachgoers and divers, with its iconic pyramids and historical sites fueling the worldwide travel renaissance.
Not only are North Africa and the Middle East gaining traction, but several South American countries have also significantly increased their visitor numbers. Brazil ranks fourth with a 46% growth since 2019, followed closely by Colombia at 45%. Chile also makes the top ten with a 33% increase, just behind Japan. This surge in South America can be attributed to improved tourist infrastructure and an increasing demand for nature and adventure travel.
In Asia, Japan stands out as a clear winner, boasting a 34% increase in visitors since 2019, which places it sixth on the global list. The country's rising popularity among international travelers, coupled with a favorable exchange rate for the yen, has made it a more affordable destination for many.
In Europe, the Nordic countries have shown remarkable growth. Norway recorded a 28% increase, ranking eighth globally, while Denmark follows in tenth place with a 22% growth, just behind Serbia. Other European nations such as Portugal, Spain, France, and Greece have also seen an uptick in their visitor numbers, though not as dramatically as the leaders.
While many destinations celebrate new records, others have yet to return to their previous heights. A stark example is Israel, where international visitor numbers in 2025 fell approximately 71% below 2019 levels, partly due to the current political situation. Similarly, Ireland and Argentina reported declines of 32% and 23%, respectively, compared to pre-pandemic figures, while Germany experienced an 8% decrease.
