Germany Reaffirms Commitment to UN-Led Negotiations in Western Sahara

Berlin, Germany – On May 1, 2026, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reiterated Germany's steadfast commitment to the political process led by the United Nations regarding the Western Sahara conflict. He expressed the nation's unwavering support for both the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, emphasizing the importance of facilitating negotiations aimed at achieving a fair, conclusive, and mutually agreeable resolution between the conflicting parties—the Polisario Front and Morocco. This solution is crucial to ensuring the right to self-determination for the people of Western Sahara.

During his visit to Rabat, the capital of Morocco, Minister Wadephul articulated Germany's readiness to assist in facilitating consultations between the Polisario Front and Morocco within the UN's framework. He emphasized that Germany's diplomatic and economic stance will continue to align with international law, reaffirming the country’s commitment to supporting the efforts of the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy.

In a related statement made just two days prior, Kathrin Deschauer, the spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry, highlighted the significance of the negotiation process under UN auspices. According to her, this process is crucial as it represents the only viable path toward a just, enduring, and mutually acceptable political resolution of the Western Sahara issue.

When a journalist inquired about the UN's recommendations advocating for a referendum to resolve the Western Sahara issue and Germany's stance on this approach, Deschauer asserted that the German government firmly believes that the final status of Western Sahara remains undetermined. She reiterated that ongoing negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations are of paramount importance.
