Germany Joins Global Powers in Supporting Morocco's Economic Growth in the Sahara

Germany's Commitment to Morocco's Southern Provinces

Morocco's ambitious strategy to accelerate economic development in its southern provinces is increasingly capturing the attention of major global players. Following endorsements from nations such as the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, Germany has also stepped forward to express its support for the economic advancement of the Moroccan Sahara. This significant announcement was made in Rabat by German Foreign Minister Johann David Wadephul during a press conference that followed his meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

During the briefing, Wadephul articulated Germany's commitment to fostering sustainable development and creating a favorable environment for investment in Morocco, particularly by encouraging increased participation from German businesses. He underscored Morocco's status as a "regional economic powerhouse," emphasizing that the kingdom's strengths, especially in the Sahara, are expected to further enhance the bilateral partnership between Germany and Morocco.

Support for Autonomy and Regional Resolution

The German Foreign Minister also commended the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 in October 2025, describing the concept of "genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty" as the most promising pathway towards a resolution of the regional issues at hand. Wadephul reaffirmed Germany's backing of the Security Council's initiatives and urged all involved parties to engage in efforts to resolve the conflict, advocating for the Moroccan autonomy plan as a viable solution.

On this pivotal day, Nasser Bourita and Johann David Wadephul co-chaired the second session of the Morocco-Germany Multidimensional Strategic Dialogue, further solidifying the collaborative efforts between the two nations in addressing the complexities of the Sahara region.
