Drones Enhance Beach Safety in Morocco

In a significant move to bolster beach safety during the summer season, Morocco has initiated the deployment of drones along its coastlines. This innovative strategy is part of a broader collaborative effort between regional civil protection authorities and local councils aimed at ensuring the safety of beachgoers and reducing drowning incidents. As the summer season approaches, preparations have been meticulously coordinated to provide the necessary logistical and human resources for beach safety.

According to various sources, the deployment of seasonal lifeguards commenced this past week at several beaches, with these trained professionals set to remain on duty until September. Their recruitment followed a successful selection process held in April, ensuring that the lifeguards are well-prepared for the challenges ahead. Notably, this year’s beach safety efforts will leverage drone technology, which was trialed last summer in the cities of Agadir and Tangier. This cutting-edge approach is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of rescue operations.

In Agadir, efforts have led to an increase in the number of lifeguards from 200 to 215, strategically stationed across various beaches to ensure effective monitoring and intervention. In recognition of their crucial role, the monthly compensation for these lifeguards has been raised from 2,500 dirhams to 3,200 dirhams for the five-month season, aligning with similar initiatives in other coastal cities to incentivize their vital work.

Operational Advantages of Drone Technology

The implementation of drones is particularly advantageous for aerial reconnaissance during rescue operations, providing a bird's-eye view that allows monitoring stations to respond swiftly and effectively, especially during peak times. The General Directorate of Civil Protection organized competitions in April to select young lifeguards aged between 20 and 40, who will be tasked with ensuring beach safety from May 1 through the end of September. Last season saw approximately 3,315 seasonal lifeguards deployed across Morocco, a figure confirmed by Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit in response to a parliamentary inquiry regarding beach safety measures.

Laftit emphasized that the reliance on these lifeguards is essential, given the complexities involved in safeguarding beachgoers against drowning risks, which cannot be managed solely by the civil protection services. These lifeguards undergo rigorous training following their selection, equipping them with the skills needed to protect the public effectively.
