Discovering the Joy of Scouting: A Weekend in Ceuta

Embracing the Spirit of Scouting

Although I have never been a scout myself, my journey into the world of scouting began through my son; much like many significant life experiences, this path unfolded gradually, revealing a unique way of engaging with the world around us. This past weekend in Ceuta, I experienced the essence of scouting more profoundly than ever before. Over 1,500 scouts from across Spain, representing a diverse array of ages and accents, came together to share songs, play games, explore the streets, and experience that overwhelming joy that accompanies a shared sense of community. In an age characterized by screens and the relentless rush of modern life, this gathering stood out as a refreshing escape, devoid of distractions aside from a simple scarf around the neck and an eagerness to connect with others.

A Celebration of Community and Values

In these tumultuous times, marked by rampant consumerism, individualism, and constant noise, witnessing so many children enjoying themselves in such a wholesome manner is truly heartening. Their joy does not stem from perfection, but rather from their journey of learning to respect one another and to foster a sense of community. The Quercus 448 group, representing Andalusia, emerged victorious at the 51st Spanish Scout Song Festival, yet merely being present at this event felt like a reward in itself. It was a poignant moment to observe how a single song encapsulated 41 years of history, tracing back to the founding of the group by Antonio Lucas and Loli López, culminating in a performance by their son Raúl and three of their grandchildren. The song, crafted by Juanjo Amador and Raúl Lucas, resonated with themes of solidarity and camaraderie, embodying the values essential for nurturing intergenerational connections.

As I looked around, I was struck by the selfless contributions of numerous volunteers, many of whom have silver hair yet continue to give their all. The spirit of scouting embodies something that is often hard to articulate in a time when nearly everything is quantified, monetized, or showcased. Here, there were plenty of helping hands, dedicated to organizing, solving problems, and providing care. Their efforts transformed an entire city into an open home for three days.

I had not previously visited Ceuta, but I knew it shared a telephone area code, a bishopric, and a passion for carnival celebrations with Cádiz. Yet, Ceuta has a distinct Gaditan thread that becomes apparent upon stepping off the ferry. The light, the sea, the Muralla Real, the unique stone, and the accent all echo this connection. Throughout history, civilizations and countries have vied for Ceuta due to its strategic position; however, it is the city itself that truly captivates with its hospitality, cleanliness, and the harmonious coexistence of diverse cultures. Here, one can enjoy fried fish and skewers on the same menu.

Indeed, we returned with an award, but more importantly, we left with something intangible that cannot be displayed in a showcase: the profound reassurance that there exist spaces where vital and necessary values are shared. Ceuta made this experience unforgettable. Thank you.
