Discover the Allure of Fez: Morocco's Hidden Gem

Fez: The Cultural Heart of Morocco

When one thinks about traveling to Morocco, the bustling city of Marrakech often springs to mind. Renowned for its vibrant souks, exquisite rooftop dining, and luxurious riads, Marrakech has long been the country's prime travel destination. However, this popularity comes with the downsides of overcrowding and a landscape increasingly tailored for tourists. In stark contrast, the enchanting city of Fez offers a serene yet equally captivating experience. During my recent winter expedition to this beautiful locale, I discovered the charm and tranquility that Fez has to offer.

Nestled in northern inland Morocco, Fez, also known as Fes, is the oldest imperial city in the country, established in 808 AD. This magnificent city is often celebrated as Morocco's cultural and spiritual nucleus, earning it the title of the "Athens of Africa." As I wandered through its intricate maze of narrow streets, I was greeted by royal palaces, centuries-old mosques, and ornately designed madrasas (Islamic schools), all of which embody the city's rich tradition of scholarship and craftsmanship. Unlike the frenetic pace of Marrakech, Fez provides a more relaxed atmosphere where visitors can absorb the local lifestyle, often finding that residents outnumber tourists in various parts of the medina.

Fez is not only a feast for the eyes but is beginning to gain recognition on a wider scale; it has recently been included in Condé Nast Traveller’s list of the Best Places to Go in 2026. This growing acknowledgment underscores the city’s rising status as a must-visit destination in Morocco, inviting travelers to explore its hidden treasures and immerse themselves in its authentic culture.
