Cultural Identity of Es-Semara Highlighted by the Moroccan Consulate in Bordeaux

Celebrating Es-Semara's Rich Cultural Heritage

The vibrant city of Es-Semara was recently honored at the Mer Marine Museum in Bordeaux during a cultural event orchestrated by the Moroccan Consulate in Bordeaux, in collaboration with the "France-Morocco Peace and Sustainable Development" Foundation. This gathering aimed to showcase the spiritual and cultural heritage of this Moroccan Saharan city, emphasizing its pivotal role in fostering dialogue between diverse cultures and religions.

A significant highlight of the event was the screening of the documentary film titled "The Encounters of Es-Semara: For the Convergence and Understanding of Religions and Cultures," directed by Mohamed Abderrahman Tazi. This thought-provoking documentary recounted gatherings held in Es-Semara last November, which brought together distinguished figures from various faiths and cultural backgrounds to discuss and promote the values of peace, coexistence, and mutual understanding.

Additionally, an art exhibition featuring the works of Moroccan artist Fatima Diouani was presented to the audience, offering an artistic perspective on Saharan identity and the spiritual dimensions of the region. In her address, Nouzha Sahel, the General Consul of the Kingdom in Bordeaux, underscored the importance of the Es-Semara meetings as a unique space for intercultural and interreligious dialogue, embodying the core values of tolerance and coexistence that Morocco staunchly advocates. She also highlighted the symbolic significance of Es-Semara, describing it as a city of spirituality, knowledge, and a crossroads of Saharan traditions.

The organizers further emphasized the vital role of Sufism and the zaouïas in the religious and cultural heritage of the Moroccan Sahara, identifying them as historical conduits for disseminating values of moderation and openness. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the cultural and touristic profile of Es-Semara, aiming to elevate its visibility through its historical sites, spiritual heritage, and breathtaking Saharan landscapes. Observers believe that the city possesses substantial potential to emerge as a prominent cultural and tourist destination in the southern region of the Kingdom.

Hosted within the Mer Marine Museum, an institution dedicated to global maritime heritage and cultural exchanges, the event successfully gathered local officials, academics, members of the Moroccan community, and numerous students and community activists, fostering a spirit of collaboration and cultural appreciation.
