Controversial Moments Unfold at Morocco vs France Press Conference

The recent press conference held before the quarter-final match between Morocco and France in the 2026 World Cup was marred by unexpected drama, particularly highlighted by a heated altercation between journalists during Moroccan star Ibrahim Diaz's address. This incident occurred when two journalists situated at the back of the room interrupted Diaz's conference with a loud dispute, raising their voices over each other, which disrupted the proceedings significantly.

Video footage of the encounter captured one journalist shouting at his colleague, asking, "Why are you hitting me? You have no right to hit me," all while Diaz looked on, seemingly bewildered by the unfolding chaos. Amidst the commotion, a person believed to be part of the conference's organizing committee intervened to break up the conflict. During the fracas, one journalist repeatedly asserted, "He hit me," while the other countered, "Because you raised your hand twice in front of the camera." As the conference resumed, Diaz broke into laughter, appearing surprised by the bizarre situation, as reported by the French newspaper Le Parisien.

In the backdrop, a voice could be heard suggesting that the scenario resembled a schoolyard altercation, stating, "We will separate you two," followed by a calming remark, "Alright, alright, please, friends," after which the press conference continued without further incident.

Criticism of Deschamps

On another front, Didier Deschamps, the coach of the French national team, faced severe criticism from Moroccan press members, who expressed their dissatisfaction over not being granted the opportunity to pose questions during the press conference. This led to a verbal exchange between Deschamps and the journalists, which concluded with the French coach agreeing to take one additional question, as per the Brazilian network Globo.

Deschamps adhered to the FIFA protocol, addressing the media for twenty minutes. However, the French Football Federation's media office prioritized local journalists, much to the dismay of their Moroccan counterparts. Upon resuming his seat, Deschamps remarked, "I apologize; I have a long way back to the hotel, I need to have lunch with my players, and prepare for training. I left very early and have many tasks ahead." He continued, "How many of you are here? If 50 people raise their hands, I cannot answer 50 questions. But okay, feel free to ask one more question." A Moroccan journalist then inquired about the relaxed demeanor displayed by the players during training, referencing a video shared on social media. Deschamps responded, "I don’t know if you mean we are in a celebratory mood, that is not the case. We respect the Moroccan team, but there is only one spot in the semi-finals available for each team." He concluded by stating, "We won’t publish pictures of players crying, but I imagine some may be in tears. Just as the Moroccan team would not want to publish such images either; we do not wish to offend anyone."
