Controversial Moments Highlight Press Conference Before Morocco vs. France Quarterfinal

The recent press conference held prior to the highly anticipated quarterfinal match between Morocco and France in the 2026 World Cup was marked by a series of unexpected and controversial incidents. Among the most notable events was a heated altercation between journalists during a segment featuring Moroccan star player, Ibrahim Diaz. This incident unfolded as two journalists seated at the back of the room disrupted the proceedings with their shouting match, effectively cutting off Diaz's address to the press.

Footage of the incident captured one journalist yelling at his colleague, questioning, "Why are you hitting me? You have no right to hit me!" This confrontation occurred in full view of Diaz, who appeared visibly surprised by the commotion. As tempers flared, an individual, presumably part of the event's organizing committee, intervened in an attempt to defuse the situation. One journalist repeated, "He hit me," to which the other retorted, "Because you raised your hand twice in front of the camera." The absurdity of the situation elicited laughter from Diaz, as reported by the French newspaper, Le Parisien. Amidst the chaos, a voice from the background quipped, "It’s like what happens at school; we’ll separate you two," before calling for calm and allowing the press conference to resume in a more orderly manner.

Deschamps Faces Criticism

On the other side of the press conference, Didier Deschamps, the head coach of the French national team, faced significant criticism from Moroccan journalists who protested their lack of opportunity to ask him questions. This tension escalated into a verbal clash between Deschamps and the reporters, culminating in the French coach consenting to answer an additional question, as reported by Brazilian outlet, Geo Globo. While Deschamps adhered to FIFA protocol, addressing the media for 20 minutes, the French Football Federation’s media office prioritized local journalists, which did not sit well with their Moroccan counterparts.

In a moment of contention, Deschamps expressed his apologies, stating, "I have a long way back to the hotel, need to have lunch with my players, and prepare for training. I came out early and have many tasks ahead of me." He further remarked, "How many of you are here? If 50 people raise their hands, I cannot answer 50 questions. But alright, feel free to ask another question." A Moroccan journalist then inquired about the relaxed demeanor displayed by the players during training, referencing a video that had circulated on social media. In response, Deschamps clarified, "I don’t know if you mean we’re in a celebratory atmosphere, that’s not the case. We respect the Moroccan team, but there’s only one spot in the semifinals for both teams." He concluded by stating, "We won’t be sharing images of players crying, but I can imagine some might be emotional. Just like the Moroccan team won’t be sharing such images either; we don’t want to offend anyone."
