Strengthening U.S.-Morocco Military Ties
On Friday, May 1, 2026, American Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau commenced the military segment of his official visit to Morocco. Accompanied by Duke Buchan, the U.S. Ambassador to Rabat, Landau visited the military airbase in Benguerir, as announced by the U.S. diplomatic mission in Morocco. During the visit, U.S. officials engaged with both Moroccan and American military personnel who are collaboratively working to enhance defense cooperation between the two nations. A statement from the diplomatic mission emphasized the importance of this partnership, noting that "the security of the United States is significantly bolstered when we unite with allies like Morocco."
This visit follows a previous trip in January by Bryan J. Ellis, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for African Affairs. The Benguerir base is home to the Royal Armed Forces' (FAR) Second Parachute Infantry Brigade, an elite unit recognized for its air-drop operations and as the first African unit to meet NATO standards. This brigade routinely participates in international military exercises, including the renowned African Lion exercises.
In mid-April, Morocco and the United States signed a new ten-year military cooperation agreement, marking a significant development in their ongoing defense relationship. This agreement is expected to further enhance the capabilities and cooperation between the two nations, solidifying Morocco's role as a key ally in regional security.
