Celebrating Moroccan Heritage: The 26th Caftan Week Kicks Off in Marrakech

The vibrant city of Marrakech has officially launched the 26th edition of the "Caftan Week," an event organized by the magazine "Women from Morocco," running from May 7 to May 10. This year's theme, "Breath of the Atlas," aims to highlight the connections between the cultural heritage of the Atlas region and contemporary Moroccan caftan designs.

This edition coincides with the recognition of the Moroccan caftan as a part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage, which has significantly influenced the program's focus on the concept of "transmission" between generations. The organizers aim to showcase the artisanal skills of Moroccan craftsmen and to promote the visual identity linked to the Atlas in the fields of sewing and embroidery.

The opening day featured the inauguration of an exhibition at "Dar el-Basha" titled "Traditional Atlas Craftsmanship," showcasing the works of seven artisans representing the Amazigh heritage. This exhibition, which will remain open throughout the event, aims to educate the public about the vital role artisans play in preserving traditional techniques and their essential contribution to the production chain of authentic Moroccan fashion.

In a scholarly aspect, a masterclass held at the Saadian Palace discussed the balance between "modernity and authenticity" in caftan production. Esteemed professionals and academics participated, including Jalila Mersli, President of the Traditional Industries Chamber for the Casablanca-Settat region, and designer Amina Boucetta. The discussions emphasized the importance of responsible innovation that respects the fundamental principles of Moroccan attire.

The program also includes press meetings to present the artistic vision for this edition, alongside a special competition for "young talents." This initiative allows ten emerging designers to showcase their work before a specialized jury, with outstanding participants being selected to take part in next year's major edition, as part of a strategy to support new talents in the fashion industry.

The event will culminate in a grand show on May 9, featuring 13 designers who will present innovative collections inspired by the landscapes and colors of the Atlas region, striving to deliver an artistic vision that blends artisanal excellence with a contemporary touch that meets international fashion standards.
