Celebrating Tango in Casablanca
From April 24 to 26, Casablanca hosted the inaugural Casablanca Tango Cup, an international event that brought together passionate dancers to celebrate the art of tango, aiming to establish the city as a significant hub for this ancient dance form. Tango, which originated on the banks of the Río de la Plata, has found a new home in Morocco, where its expressive movements and rhythmic melodies resonate deeply, creating a cultural bridge that transcends language barriers. This dance, recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, embodies a duality of emotion—both the pulsating rhythm of the music and the passionate yet restrained movements of the dancers, who connect with one another in a profound and intimate manner.
In Casablanca, a vibrant community dedicated to tango has emerged, uniting enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. Local associations and clubs, led by both Moroccan and Argentine individuals, have created spaces for individuals to learn and engage with tango, illustrating the power of art to bring people together. Samia Eddamanhoury, the founder of Casa Tango Club, emphasized the necessity of a cultural event dedicated to tango as the community expanded, showcasing the existing talents within the Moroccan tango scene. Her vision culminated in the organization of the Casablanca Tango Cup, marking it as the first event of its kind in Morocco dedicated to this beloved dance.
A Celebration of Dance and Culture
Collaborating with the Moroccan Association of Argentine Tango (AMTA), the Argentine Embassy in Morocco, and local tourism authorities, the Casablanca Tango Cup attracted over 250 participants from Casablanca and Rabat. The event featured workshops, milongas, performances, and inspirational meetings with renowned tango figures, including Claudio Gonzalez. Attendees experienced the art of tango through professional couples like Carla Rossi and José Luis Salvo, whose performance created an emotionally charged atmosphere that moved many spectators to tears. A unique rendition of 'Libertango', infused with Eastern influences, facilitated a harmonious cultural dialogue, drawing enthusiastic responses from the audience.
As the festival unfolded, the dancers melded seamlessly with the music, creating a visually stunning display of grace and harmony. Samia Eddamanhoury observed a palpable excitement among the crowd, especially among Moroccans experiencing tango for the first time. The event not only showcased technical skill but also fostered a deep emotional connection with the audience, reflecting a new appreciation for this art form.
Othman Cherif Alami, president of the Casablanca Regional Tourism Council, expressed pride in the city’s role as a cultural melting pot, highlighting the potential for regional talents to gain international recognition. The competition aspect of the Casablanca Tango Cup allowed amateur dancers from various clubs to showcase their creativity and movement skills, with categories ranging from improvisation to choreography. The success of these talented individuals, trained in Morocco, paves the way for their representation at an upcoming tango final in China, further elevating Morocco's profile on the global stage.
Looking forward, the Casablanca Tango Cup has opened new avenues for tango in Morocco, with plans already underway for a second edition. The event aims to continue fostering an environment of connection, emotion, and shared beauty among participants and audiences alike.
