Significant Infrastructure Developments at the Port of Casablanca
The Port of Casablanca is undergoing a major transformation as Marsa Maroc, the operator, has successfully completed the first phase of a project aimed at deepening the docks of its multipurpose terminal. This enhancement marks a crucial milestone in modernizing port facilities, allowing the port to accommodate larger vessels than ever before. Specifically, the first phase includes the deepening of 230 linear meters of dock to a depth of 12 meters, facilitating the reception of ships weighing up to 60,000 tons, a significant increase from the previous capacity of approximately 35,000 tons.
Marsa 2030: A Strategic Vision for Port Development
This initiative aligns with the strategic plan known as "Marsa 2030," which aims to bolster the attractiveness and competitiveness of Moroccan port terminals. Ultimately, the deepening project will expand to a total of 530 meters by its completion, which is scheduled for the second quarter of 2028, with an estimated investment of 475 million dirhams. The enhancements not only increase the capacity for accommodating larger vessels but also promise to streamline port operations, reduce processing times, and optimize overall terminal performance. With these improvements, the terminal's annual capacity is projected to exceed 8 million tons.
For economic operators, these advancements are expected to translate into reduced logistical costs and enhanced competitiveness in the market. Furthermore, they will support Morocco's trade dynamics and solidify the Port of Casablanca's role as a strategic hub for industrial and commercial activities in the region. As a key player in port management across Africa, Marsa Maroc currently operates 35 terminals across 21 ports, handling an annual traffic exceeding 67 million tons. This investment underscores the group's commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and fostering the growth of national foreign trade.
