Canary Islands Strengthen Ties with Morocco to Boost Economic Opportunities

New Cooperative Framework between the Canary Islands and Morocco

The Canary Islands have taken a significant step in their strategy towards Africa by launching a new cooperation initiative with Morocco. This initiative aims to transform scientific advancements into tangible economic and social opportunities for both regions. The government of the Canary Islands and the Moroccan region of Souss Massa have embarked on a new phase of collaboration following the signing of an agreement between the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands (ITC) and Ibn Zohr University. The agreement's primary objective is to promote joint projects in strategic sectors such as energy, water, blue economy, and technological innovation.

Focus on Sustainable Development and Innovation

This agreement was formalized during the second day of a Moroccan institutional mission to the islands, further strengthening a relationship aimed at generating economic and social opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic. It establishes a stable framework for applied research, knowledge transfer, and technological solutions addressing common challenges like sustainability and resource accessibility.

Migdalia Machín, the regional councilor, emphasized that this alliance solidifies a relationship “based on knowledge and real cooperation,” highlighting the Canary Islands' role as a bridge between Europe and Africa in innovation and development. The memorandum also facilitates the exchange of researchers and encourages technological startups, along with the industrialization of scientific results.

Nabil Hmina, the rector of Ibn Zohr University, noted that their collaboration will focus on critical areas such as energy and desalination, which are essential for regions facing similar challenges. During the visit, the Moroccan delegation toured ITC facilities in Pozo Izquierdo, including the DESALRO 2.0 plant, recognized as the world's most energy-efficient desalination plant, and the BIOGREENFINERY platform, which specializes in renewable fuels. These infrastructures reinforce the Canary Islands' status as a leader in technology applied to water and energy, both vital sectors for sustainable development.

The day's agenda also included discussions on economic and logistical advancements, with meetings between the chambers of commerce from Gran Canaria and Agadir, and a visit to the Port of Las Palmas to explore new trade routes. Both regions agree that enhancing maritime connectivity will be crucial in boosting trade, logistics, and sectors like the blue economy and naval repair.

This strategic move solidifies the Canary Islands' position as a key node between continents and paves the way for new investments, skilled employment, and technological development linked to critical sectors for their economic future.
