Canary Islands Endorse Morocco's Autonomy Plan for Sahara Dispute Resolution

The government of the Canary Islands has officially aligned itself with Spain's stance, endorsing Morocco's autonomy plan as a credible and serious foundation for resolving the longstanding Sahara dispute. This declaration was made by Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo during a press conference held on Monday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he was joined by Karim Achengli, the President of the Souss-Massa Regional Council, who is visiting with a delegation of institutional and economic representatives from the region.

This affirmation by the Canary Islands mirrors Spain's recent position following the 13th High-Level Meeting, which expressed support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797. This resolution underscores that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is among the most viable solutions to address the Sahara conflict. President Clavijo emphasized the importance of unity within Spain, stating, "We are part of Spain and, of course, we fully adhere to the decisions taken by our government. We fully share and respect this agreement."

In addition, President Clavijo highlighted his three visits to Morocco during his tenure, underlining the significance of strengthening cooperative ties with the Kingdom. In this context, several trade missions have been organized, aimed at enhancing exchanges and seizing opportunities across various sectors, particularly in the blue economy, tourism, academic collaborations, and water management.

Moreover, a recent report from the Spain-based defense analysis platform, Defensa, has provided an in-depth look into Morocco's evolving military strategy. This analysis reveals a strategic doctrine that integrates the defense of territorial integrity while playing an active role in regional security within the Sahel corridor. As Morocco's security framework garners increasing scrutiny, these developments are particularly noteworthy.
