María Aguilar Halak, a 35-year-old dancer from Neuquén, Argentina, is finally set to return to her homeland after enduring several harrowing months in Morocco. Following a social media campaign that garnered significant public attention and support, she has secured her flight back to Argentina, arriving at Ezeiza International Airport on Thursday, July 30. Halak's ordeal included severe workplace abuse, gender-based violence, and a financial scam that left her stranded without resources in the African country. Her return was made possible largely due to the financial assistance from a childhood friend who covered a substantial portion of her travel expenses.
Expressing her gratitude, María took to Instagram to thank everyone who contributed to her cause. "I cannot express enough how thankful I am to everyone who helped, especially to one person who made this possible in a matter of minutes," she shared. This heartfelt acknowledgment reflects the community's support that played a crucial role in her safe return.
Flight Details and Ongoing Legal Proceedings
According to her travel itinerary, María's flight will include a stopover in Madrid before she lands in Argentina, where she plans to reunite with her family after a brief stay in Buenos Aires. Following her time in the capital, she will travel to Neuquén, with her arrival expected on August 2. The repatriation process was facilitated by the Argentine consul in Morocco, Arnaldo Tomás Ferrari, along with Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno, who ensured that the necessary arrangements were made following María's distressing accounts of her experiences shared online.
Despite her imminent departure, María confirmed that she will continue to pursue legal action against her aggressor in Morocco. The accused is facing multiple serious charges related to fraud and violence against her, which she detailed in her posts. "The perpetrator has been charged with fraud and manipulation of a foreign citizen, as well as psychological and physical violence against women," she explained, highlighting her determination to seek justice.
Although María feels relieved about her return, she continues to experience anxiety and fear due to threats she has received. Nevertheless, she emphasized that the support from the community was instrumental in resolving her situation more swiftly than anticipated.
Her nightmare reportedly began in March when she accepted a job offer in the coastal city of Agadir. During a performance, she suffered a workplace accident that severely injured her spine. "The last two lumbar discs, L5 and S1, were destroyed; I now require surgery to recover," she stated. Furthermore, she alleged that her employers failed to cover her medical expenses and stopped paying her salary. In search of better prospects, she moved to Marrakech, where she encountered a man posing as a doctor, who turned out to be a boxer that stole approximately 4,000 euros from her, funds she had saved for her stay and medical treatment.
