Annual Conference on Ancient Schools Concludes in Taroudant

Celebrating the Legacy of Ancient Schools in Morocco

On Tuesday, the eleventh session of the annual conference dedicated to ancient schools concluded at the religious complex in Taroudant. This significant event, organized by the Sousse Foundation for Ancient Schools, was held under the esteemed patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, emphasizing the importance of these institutions in promoting values of moderation and balance while reinforcing Morocco's religious and scientific identity. The theme of this year's conference, "The Prophetic Biography: A Guiding Light and Methodology," highlighted the essential role that the study of the Prophet Muhammad's life plays in shaping moral and ethical values.

This year's session, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs and the General Secretariat of the Higher Scientific Council, saw participation from a distinguished group of scholars, researchers, and jurists, alongside students from ancient schools spanning various regions of the kingdom. Mustafa Maslouti, the Secretary General of the Sousse Foundation for Ancient Schools, remarked in a statement to the Moroccan News Agency that organizing this session is part of the ongoing efforts to elevate the status of ancient schools within the national scientific and religious landscape, acknowledging their contributions to the fields of religious sciences and the promotion of moderate values.

The choice of the conference's theme reflects a growing awareness of the significance of the Prophetic biography as a fundamental source for ethical and educational values, providing a unique opportunity for scholars, researchers, and students to exchange insights on how to draw lessons from the biography in contemporary contexts. This annual event has established itself as a vital scientific gathering that fosters communication among various ancient schools in Morocco, enhancing their role in religious and scientific education while maintaining their authentic Moroccan character.

A Rich Program Celebrating Religious Heritage

The closing ceremony of the conference featured the honoring of several scholars and students, along with various community activists, in recognition of their contributions to religious, scientific, and social work, as well as their support for the visibility of ancient schools in the national cultural and religious scene. The program, which commenced on April 14, included a series of scientific lectures and religious lessons that approached the topic of the Prophetic biography from multiple perspectives. Key discussions focused on the importance of the Prophetic biography in the lives of Muslims, methodologies for its study, and the stages of its documentation, covering both the Meccan and Medinan phases and the valuable lessons they impart across different aspects of life.

Alongside the conference, religious and Quranic evenings were organized, featuring participation from several ancient schools that showcased recitations, praises, and spiritual songs, enriching the event with a distinctive spiritual atmosphere that reflects a deep connection to Morocco's authentic religious heritage. Additionally, the program included field visits to various ancient schools in the Souss-Massa region, where the scientific delegation observed the teaching and training conditions at institutions such as the ancient scientific school "Al-Muhadi" in the commune of Kerdan, as well as other schools in the regions of Sidi Ifni and Tiznit, which exemplify models in preserving and advancing ancient educational practices.
