African Lion 26: Strengthening Global Security Through Multinational Cooperation

African Lion 26 Kicks Off in Morocco

The highly anticipated African Lion 26 (AL26), which stands as U.S. Africa Command's largest annual joint exercise, has officially commenced in Morocco. This significant military exercise is being conducted across four host nations: Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia, with activities in Morocco comprising approximately 5,000 personnel from over 40 countries. AL26 began on April 27 and will run until May 8, 2026, showcasing the commitment of the U.S. and its allies to bolster security and operational readiness amidst complex regional challenges.

Co-led by the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), AL26 is meticulously designed to enhance collective security capabilities among the U.S., African nations, and global allies. The exercise rigorously tests the rapid deployment abilities of the U.S. joint force and its partner nations, emphasizing readiness in multi-domain threat environments. Such collaborative efforts are crucial in maintaining regional stability and ensuring a united front against common security threats.

Comprehensive Training and Innovative Technologies

AL26 features an extensive array of training events aimed at assessing the full spectrum of military operations. Participants engage in multinational academic sessions, command field exercises, combined armed live-fire drills, and specialized training in chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) scenarios. Additionally, the exercise includes special operations training, air and maritime operations, as well as humanitarian civic assistance initiatives, demonstrating the multifaceted approach to modern military readiness.

Notably, U.S. Soldiers from various units, including the 79th Theater Sustainment Command and the 173rd Mobile Brigade Combat Team, are actively involved in setting up tactical operations centers and conducting live-fire exercises, which validate their capabilities to operate effectively in dynamic combat scenarios. The integration of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence and autonomous systems, plays a critical role in enhancing operational efficiency and decision-making processes during the exercise.

Furthermore, the Utah National Guard is participating in humanitarian efforts by providing medical assistance to an estimated 20,000 patients, showcasing the exercise’s commitment to not only military readiness but also to community support and welfare. As AL26 progresses, it reinforces the enduring partnership between the U.S. and its African allies, solidifying the necessary coalition framework to effectively deter regional threats.
