Relations between Morocco and the United States are evolving significantly, particularly in the context of the kingdom’s southern provinces, where Washington’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara is increasingly translating into tangible investments and economic collaborations. Ambassador Buchan’s visit to Laayoune marks the first by a US ambassador since former Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker visited the city in 2021, further amplifying the significance of this trip amidst the backdrop of expanding economic engagement. During discussions with Communal Council President Moulay Hamdi Ould Errachid at Laayoune’s municipal headquarters, the two leaders reviewed the city’s urban development and explored opportunities for enhancing collaboration between Moroccan and American businesses and institutions.
While wearing the traditional Sahrawi deraa, Ambassador Buchan was briefed on various major infrastructure, housing, public service, cultural, and industrial projects spearheaded by King Mohammed VI’s development strategy. Ould Errachid described Laayoune as an emerging investment hub and a gateway to Africa, revealing potential opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy, fisheries, logistics, tourism, manufacturing, and services, all bolstered by modern infrastructure and an increasingly favorable business climate.
According to municipal sources, Ambassador Buchan expressed a keen interest in mechanisms aimed at attracting foreign investment and discussed strategies to strengthen commercial ties between Moroccan and American enterprises. Earlier in the week, he reiterated Washington’s backing for Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara and praised Morocco’s decision to name the extensive Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway after former US President Donald Trump, calling King Mohammed VI a true partner for peace. Trump expressed gratitude for the honor and conveyed hopes of one day traveling the highway in its entirety.
Since the United States recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in December 2020, successive US administrations have upheld this position while continuing to support the UN-led political process, endorsing Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the most viable solution to the long-standing dispute.
