Morocco's Pioneering Role in UN Peacekeeping Operations Highlighted in Rabat

Morocco's Commitment to Global Peacekeeping Efforts

In a significant meeting held in Rabat, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita engaged with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, to review Morocco's notable contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations. This dialogue, which marks Lacroix's second official visit to the Kingdom, underscores Morocco's long-standing commitment to global peace initiatives that date back to 1960. The discussions highlighted how Morocco's involvement in peacekeeping stems from a royal strategic vision that emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in maintaining peace and security.

Currently, Morocco ranks as the ninth largest troop-contributing country to UN peacekeeping missions and has taken a leadership role as the chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for the year 2026. Additionally, the Kingdom acts as the coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on peacekeeping matters, which reflects the trust and respect it commands on the global stage regarding issues of peace and security. The visit from Lacroix coincides with the UN Secretary-General’s launch of comprehensive reforms aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of UN peacekeeping operations. These initiatives fall under the broader framework of the “UN 80” strategy, which seeks to simplify and improve the UN Secretariat's functioning while reinforcing the role of political solutions in conflict resolution.
