Morocco's Ambitious Stadium Project Aims for 2030 World Cup Final

Morocco is embarking on an ambitious project to construct the world’s largest football stadium, with an estimated cost of around $1 billion. This monumental venue, designed to accommodate 115,000 spectators, is strategically located near Casablanca and aims to be completed by the end of next year, as stated by a project official. The country is facing stiff competition from Spain, one of the co-hosts for the 2030 World Cup, alongside Portugal, as FIFA has yet to finalize the location for the tournament's final match.

As of now, approximately 30% of the stadium's construction has been completed, with around 40% of the seating areas already built, according to Yassir Soussi, the director of the national agency overseeing infrastructure projects. He emphasized the urgency of the project, confirming that construction is ongoing around the clock in three shifts to meet the deadline. The stadium, along with its associated facilities, is projected to cost approximately $1 billion, and authorities plan to enhance accessibility by linking it to Casablanca and Rabat through new highways and a train station.

The stadium is being developed by Tgcc and Sgtm on a sprawling 150-hectare site nestled between agricultural land and forests. Architect Tarek Oualalou shared that the stadium will feature a large tent-like roof inspired by traditional Moroccan tents, designed to allow natural light to filter through. Additionally, the enclosed botanical gardens will showcase the diverse natural landscapes found throughout Morocco, further enriching the experience of attending a football match. Oualalou expressed that the overarching goal of the project is to create a less urbanized and more immersive football experience for fans.
